Renewal Credit Guidelines

In each five year renewal cycle, certified employees (teachers and administrators) are required by State Board of Education policy to complete 150 hours of professional development.   Each 10 hours of professional development equates to1.0 units of renewal credit (CEUs).  Certified employees receive 1.0 CEUs for each year of employment.

Guilford County Schools awards renewal units in increments of 6 hours (1.0 CEUs).  Therefore, to receive renewal credit,  you must complete a minimum of 6 hours of professional development.   Renewal credit must be pre-approved and job relevant.   Courses posted on this website are pre-approved for renewal credit and will be posted to your transcript electronically.

The State Board of Education also requires that all K-8 teachers (all regular education teachers including art, music, and physical education; only excluding counselors and media specialists) must complete 30 hours (3.0 CEUs) reading credit within each licensure cycle.

Prior Approval is required for all renewal credit activities which are offered by any entity other than the Guilford County Schools, including colleges, universities, technical schools and community colleges. "Prior approval" means that an employee desiring renewal credit for a particular activity must request approval before the ending date of the activity. Employees are encouraged to request approval before the activity begins. Requests submitted after the ending date of the activity will not be approved. Prior approval is necessary to comply with state regulations which require an LEA to determine the appropriateness of awarding renewal credit for a specific activity in advance of the activity. Prior approval also helps to avoid misunderstandings regarding qualifying activities and reduces the possibility of an employee paying to enroll in an activity which renewal credit will not be awarded.
